Conversion and renovation of a townhouse

Never modern.
House Maria is a townhouse in Aachen. It was built in 1926 as a teacher's residence for a neighbouring school. Due to the solid substance with preserved period elements such as stairs, doors and floors, it was decided to restore and continue building in the sense of the original architecture. Modish additions from the 70s and 80s were carefully removed.
Subtle interventions were made in the floor plans to enable more open-plan living within the house and in relation to the mature garden.
The newly installed materials, such as wooden windows, floor oils, lime plasters and mineral paints, create surfaces that are in harmony with the historical building and healthy to live in.
The two residential floors were remodelled in just 4 months. The roof storey was prepared for a later extension.
